The natural fortress of the Egba, Abeokuta
Olumo Rock
Olumo Rock rises about 137 metres (449 feet) above sea level in Abeokuta, Ogun State. In the 19th century it served the Egba people as a natural fortress, giving shelter and a lookout during inter-tribal wars. The name Abeokuta is commonly translated from Yoruba as "under the rock".
The rock is also a place of cultural importance. Its patron spirit is venerated in Yoruba religion, and caves, rock shelters and shrine areas around the site show how it has been used over time.
