Freedom Park, Lagos

From colonial prison to public space in Lagos

Freedom Park, Lagos

Freedom Park sits in the middle of downtown Lagos, on Lagos Island. The site was once Her Majesty's Broad Street Prison, built in the colonial period. The prison was demolished in 1979, and the land was later turned into a public space, designed by the architect Theo Lawson and linked to Nigeria's 50th independence anniversary in 2010.

Today the park is open to the public and hosts social events and recreation. Monuments on the site reflect the history of the prison.
