Lagos's coastal town of slave-trade history

Badagry Historical Sites

Badagry is a coastal town in Lagos State, about 69 km south-west of Lagos city and close to the border with Benin. It was a trading centre on the West African coast from 1736 to 1851, and it played a role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade as a middleman between European and inland traders.

Sites linked to this history include the Point of No Return on Gberefu Island, the Seriki Williams Abass Slave Museum (a former slave barracoon), and the Mobee Royal Palace Slave Relics Museum. Badagry is also tied to early Christian missions in Nigeria, and the Agia Tree is remembered as a place where early Methodists preached.

This is a serious history, and visits are best approached with respect.
