Discover Nigeria Beyond Your Home State: A New Push for Domestic Tourism

How much of Nigeria have you explored beyond the places you already know?

From coastal escapes and mountain landscapes to historic communities, waterfalls, art spaces and cultural festivals, the country offers a wide range of experiences for travellers willing to look beyond their usual routes.

A report published by Peoples Daily on 23 October 2026 described a partnership between the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and LEXLUC Global Services and Tours to promote domestic tourism, cultural heritage and destination awareness.

The report says the agreement provides a framework for the “Meet My Town, Know My State” initiative, which is intended to encourage Nigerians to discover destinations, learn about their heritage and participate in tourism activities. The parties also discussed potential related tourism activities; proposed events should not be treated as confirmed until organisers announce details.

Why exploring Nigeria matters

Discovering local heritage

Travelling within Nigeria can introduce visitors to local architecture, traditional crafts, food, music, festivals and historical landmarks. Learning about a destination before visiting can make the experience more meaningful and help travellers engage respectfully with the communities they visit.

Supporting local businesses

A well-planned trip can create spending opportunities for local guides, transport providers, accommodation businesses, restaurants, artisans and tour operators. Choosing locally run services where appropriate can help more of the visitor economy reach the communities being explored.

Finding experiences for different interests

Not every trip needs to be a long holiday. A traveller might plan a weekend around art galleries, historic sites or local cuisine, while another might prefer a nature trail, waterfall, beach visit or cultural festival.

The best itinerary depends on the traveller’s interests, budget, available time and the practical conditions at each destination.

Planning with care

Before booking a trip, verify opening hours, transport options, accommodation, entrance fees and any relevant local guidance. For remote or unfamiliar attractions, check access arrangements and consider a reputable local guide.

Respect local customs, follow photography rules and leave natural areas clean. Responsible travel helps protect the experiences that make destinations worth visiting.

Start with one new destination

You do not need to visit every state at once. Start with a place you have wanted to see, learn about its history and plan a trip that suits your schedule.

Whether your next journey leads to a cultural landmark, a peaceful coastal retreat or a scenic natural attraction, exploring closer to home can reveal experiences you might otherwise overlook.

Nigeria has many stories waiting to be discovered, and your next trip could begin in a state you have never visited—or a familiar place you have never truly explored.
